Many companies want system
certifications to enable them
to do business in certain markets or expand opportunities. These standards include for example
ISO 9001:2000, ISO/TS 16949, AS 9100, ISO 13485, TL 9000 and others.

is that standards such as those listed above are the means to assess a system, but THEY ARE NOT THE SYSTEM ITSELF.
This is quite different from the typical product standard, which may be very specific about procedures
and data. In contrast, the system standards described above describe objectives your system must meet.
The system standards do not prescribe in detail how you must meet those objectives.
Organizations are often encouraged to start with a "gap analysis." This is a particularly perilous way to start,
that often leads to bureaucracy, frustration and added operating cost.
